The purpose of this page is to answer some of the more common questions of
others who are contemplating the addition of a new format to their camera
bag.
About two years ago I (John Harper) was bitten by the medium format bug. I
had been a 35mm amateur photographer for about 15 years and had accumulated 3
Nikon bodies and an assortment of lenses and had travelled around the world with
them thanks to the Navy Submarine Service on USS Barb (SSN-596) (shown
here in Adak, Alaska). I had been vaguely aware that something called "medium
format" existed yet I had no idea of what was what or how best to get my feet
wet in this area of photography. During a port call to Guam, I saw my first
YashicaMat 124G for sale in the Navy Exchange. The seed had been planted!
But I left the 'Mat on the shelf that day. It wasn't until two years ago that
the seed germinated into an actual purchase. During that two years I've come to
appreciate not only the benefits of a larger negative but also the fill-flash
capabilities available at all shutter speeds and the aid in composition that
ground glass (as opposed to using a viewfinder) has been for me. More about this
later.
I am by no means a "124G expert". This web page has been, and hopefully will
continue to be, a group effort.
